Running From God A Contemporary Novella edition by Matthew Roemer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

“Running from God’’ is a novel written by Matthew Roemer and it is a novel about a man who, after seeing and experiencing ‘everything that life can possibly offer’, rejects all that and embraces something that all people should embrace – the love.
The novel opens with a description (the entire novel is entirely written from a first person view, a.k.a. from the main protagonist’s point of view) of an unknown man who seem to have everything in life he is wealthy enough that he could not spend his fortune even if he could live three lives, he has women he wants and how many he wants and all in all, his life is filled with endless cycle of vices, sex, drugs, cocaine and…more sex and cocaine. And when he finishes with that he returns for more sex and cocaine just to make a point that he can afford that. Although the novel has altogether thirty five chapters, the story flows quite fast and ‘naturally’. This means that not only that a reader will be able to sink into the story quite easily, but it also means that the story is going on pretty fast. As the novel progresses, we find out that the main protagonist’s name is Kyle Black, that his parents “knew how to handle money and being rich, while he apparently does not’’. Also, as the story goes on and on, the author in a character of Kyle Black writes about his blissful life, which is not so blissful at all. The finish of the novel is something that I had expected from this novel – Black finally ‘realizes’ that the beauty of life is in love (divine and unconditional) and in its ‘simplicity’, something he could not buy and something he desperately needed.
Even though that some parts of the book seemed too much like a “running in an endless loop’’, after reading it we will see that those ‘loops’ are often needed for a man to understand something. Great book.
Virginia author Matthew Roemer, a freelance writer and author, grew up spending much time on the beaches of the East Coast and enjoying works of his favorite iconic literary figures. And that is all the biographical information we are given. It appears that RUNNING FROM GOD is his literary debut – an 82 page novella – prior to publishing this book he offered a 16 page short prelude – NUCLEAR LOVE – and reading them both it seems Matthew has the courage to share his ideas with readers at both an early stage and as those ideas become more fleshed out.

Matthew’s book is a contemporary version of The Rake’s Progress ("For idle hearts and hands and minds the Devil finds work to do.") – with an emphasis on ‘contemporary’. The story is carved from raw elements of crude language that fit the tale well.

Combining the synopses of these two books by Matthew draws a fine picture – ‘Kyle Black, a successful Financial Advisor, is one who appears to be well put together on the outside but is falling apart on the inside. On his downward spiral Kyle fights addictions of alcohol, drugs, and sexual desires. Battling the nuclear force behind a destructive love and lust filled marriage that he lost control of ten years prior, twenty-first century antics have become a constant distraction that could very well prevent him from picking up the pieces.’ And, ‘Antics one would only find the least bit of acceptable in the twenty-first century, are not out of the ordinary to be displayed by the atrocious behavior Kyle Black, a questionable and somewhat successful financial advisor. Falling to a lengthy downward spiral due to the loss of love ten years prior, is it too late for Kyle to prevail on his life's journey, or will he continue to fall and let his addictions define who he is to be as a man?’

Sound familiar? It should – stories of the fall from grace abetted by misperceptions of the world and self and fueled by abuse of drugs, alcohol, sex and foul deeds can be found in the works of many fine authors. What charges Matthew’s version is his cryptic use of language which is raw and poignant at the same time. The manner in which he falls may not be novel but the manner in which he reverses his life’s direction is worthy of comparison to some of our truly fine authors. It will be with eagerness that we watch where he spreads his imagination in his next book. He writes very well. Grady Harp, February 17
